ARTHUR'S SEAT

Holyrood Park is located in the heart of the Edinburgh city. It's a 640 acre Royal Park adjacent to Holyrood Palace. The highest point of the park is Arthur's Seat. It's an extinct volcano and it's 251 meters high above sea level. It's surprisingly rocky and wild for a hill in the centre of major city.

  • Arthur's Seat is situated 1,6 km to the east of Edinburgh Castle.
  • It's one of the symbols of Edinburgh an it's popular place for hillwalking.
  • Name of this hill is probably derived from legend about King Arthur. It's about that he could watch the battle with the Picts from the top of the hill.
  • There is an important geology, habitats of grassland and rare species of plants and animals.
  • There is a hill fort on the top of that hill, which is remainder of a former settlement.
  • There are many interesting, funny and sometimes terrifying stories and legends connected with this place.
  • Arthur's Seat appears in many books and films. For example: "The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner" by James Hogg, "One Day" by David Nicholls and movie based on the novel or Galactic Milieu Series by Julian May.

Arthur's Seat

Arthur's Seat is the most important peak of the group of hills in Holyrood Park. This ancient extinct volcano is Edinburgh's highest point, and the peak stands 251m tall. In my opinion the wiews from the other hilltops are better. Nevertheless climbing to the top of Arthur's Seat. Its one of the top activities to do and a favourite for the sportier visitors and locals
