When the decision was taken to build a bridge, a design contest was held to choose the best design. Over 50 designs were submitted – some close to what was built and some that were absolutely bonkers. The evaluation of the designs was surrounded by controversy, and it was not until 1884 that a design submitted by Sir Horace Jones, the City Architect (who was also one of the judges), was approved.

Tower Bridge is one of the London's most famous landmarks. It's on the River Thames. It has two towers, in Victorian Gothic style, that are connected with two walkways. Built between 1886 and 1864 the Tower Bridge was designed to ease road traffic. The bridge deck is freely accessible to vehicles and pedestrians. It was officially opened on 30 June 1894 by the Prince od Wales (the future King Edward VII) and his wife The Princess od Wales (Alexandra of Denmark). The bridge is 240m in length with two towers each 65m high.
Tower Bridge was closed to all road traffic for almost three months in late 2016. The work included:
- Replacing the decking and resurfacing the walkways and road.
- Replacing the expansion joints along the bridge to provide a smoother surface.
- Waterproofing the arches nade from Brock.
Tower Bridge is crossed by over 40,000 people every day. There is a beautiful view from the bridge. Especially at night. Ten men died during the cunstruction of Tower Bridge. In the last year the bridge nas opened 777 times. The Tower Bridge is named after the Tower of London which is located on one side of the bridge. To celebrate the 2012 Olympics being held in London, the Olympic rings were suspended from the Walkway on Tower Bridge. To acheive this, the bascules needed to be fully opened and the bridge was closed both under and over for 12 hours. They did look pretty amazing when they were lit up at night and a sight that most likely won't be seen again
Interesting fact: Tower Bridge used to be raised about 50 times a day but now this only happens about three times a day.

In the photo we can see a Tower Bridge, the most famous bridge in London. The bridge was built on the end of XIX century. It is situated over the River Thames and near Tower Castle from what it takes its name. In the highest place Tower Bridge has 65 meters and it is long 244 meters. The footbridges being 34 meters above the road, allow pedestrian motion. The main architect was Sir Horace Jones. At first, the bridge was beige, but now  it is in white-blue colour. In my opinion if you will be in London, Tower Bridge should be in your list "The places I must see".
